During the term, I have gained a lot of knowledge of media writing in general and the way to use other skills to improve my writing in particular. Throughout all of the blog activities, I know how to combine social media like Twitter, Storify in terms of transferring the message. One of the most beneficial thing to me in this course is the quiz. In every week, I learnt so many new and useful thing in English by doing the quiz, even the simplest and smallest ones. I encountered several difficulties sometimes, the most challenging one was to remain the duty week by week. Additionally, there was not a huge amount of work actually but it contained a lot of small tasks that required great effort to accomplish everything. The course definitely changed my thoughts about media writing – it is not simple. As mentioned above, by implementing blog activities and the quiz every week, I realized that there are still many things out there to study about media writing and to enhance the personal writing skills.
- Based on the Blog Writing Checklist from week 1 to week 12, I believe that I have finished all of the required tasks successfully. It is probably not a excellent work but the quality presents my great effort on it. The inquiry, practical and technical parts were implemented with related topics. Besides, all of the tags, categories have been added. The blog presentation overall is satisfactory to me.
- According to the feedback from the assignment 1, I lacked critical analysis and it was necessary for me to check the grammar more carefully. In this assignment, I have made several adjustments based on other peer reviews or comments. I’ve also tried to write with less minor error as possible.
The quizzes are such fastest and smartest way to learn new thing. The same thing happened here. I have absorbed a lot of insights of media writing and English on the whole. I can be confident to say that my writing skills and language knowledge have been improved considerably since the day I started this course.
The very first problem is that the repetition. Many words, terms and the structure are used repetitively. Additionally, several minor grammar errors have been found, for instance:
A witness reports a train full of people was sitting on the platform as the incident unfolds.
While all of the parts are being written in past tense, the simple present tense is used in this one. The incident is a self-harm, which is a critically important information. It should be placed on one of the top lines instead of the last one. In terms of content of the article, there is a slight confusion to readers that whether the woman has been freed out of the train or not.
According to the guidelines for reporting self-harm provided by the blog activity document, there are several things need to be considered:
- Ensure the death has been confirmed as a suicide by official sources so that the report does not fuel speculation or interfere with ongoing investigations
- Where possible, obtain informed consent from appropriate relatives or close friends before identifying the person who has died.
- Assess whether the story is clearly in the public interest. It can be useful to consult with experts for advice about the impacts of reporting a specific case.
- Consider how many stories about suicide have been run recently as research suggests that a succession of stories about suicide can reinforce suicidal behavior for people who are vulnerable.
The article does not meet the above guidelines, in particular, the story has not been confirmed by any relevant authority. The article lacks quotation from witnesses, is not supported by research and other sources.

Woman stuck under train at Eagle Junction Train Station, Brisbane
Emergency services successfully helped a woman, who is believed to be in 30s, out of a train at a railway station in Brisbane.
Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said that the woman was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with critical condition. She is currently conscious and has lower leg injuries.
Police said that this incident can be considered as a self-harm.
The woman was caught under the train at Eagle Junction railway station at about 12pm Wednesday. A witness reported that a train full of people was sitting on the platform as the incident unfolds.
At 12.55pm the same day, four fire crews finally freed the victim from the train.
The quiz of this week brings out precious knowledge about the style in writing and important factor influencing the way a story is written. On the whole, I found the quiz really enjoyable.

This blog activities are quite easy to execute. I really enjoyed the practical part, both photo essay and alternative headline writing. The quiz was not so hard but I made a lot of mistakes due to the careless reading. I believed that the knowledge about apostrophe had been gained a lots.

The organization’s audience is attracted by the noticeable title of the stories. By reading the title, readers can guess what the information provided inside, it makes them keep reading due to the useful facts and news. Additionally, the global activities throughout the stories is a significant factor to engage the audience, because readers are tend to care about things around the world.
If I were a science journalist, I would definitely be intrigued to the stories. As mentioned above, the stories presented the both generally useful information and academic elements, which is suitable for a science journalist. The diversity of the stories shown in many parts of the world also contributes to the interest, which is vitally necessary for a journalist. Therefore, I would totally follow up those stories if I were a science journalist.
The efficiency of this newsletter is newsworthy for CSG’s community. The community makes the newsletter become more informative and diverse in terms of content. Visually, the newsletter should be designed with more images and more colors. The frame, the borders, the background can be improved to reduce the boredom and monotony.
The quiz this week was easy for me because I’m pretty good at punctuation. I got 8 out 10 at the first attempt. However, I still found something new and useful, for instance, a semi-colon is a stronger stop than a comma, but is not as strong as a full-stop.
Basically this blog’s inquiry is quite difficult because the newsletter is so long. It took me a lot of time to follow up the stories and finish the review.

FAKECOMICCON IVESTIGATES INCIDENT
An incident that occurred today after a fight broke out at an annual event called FakeComicCon at the Brisbane Convention Centre caused 12 people injured.
Eight people were taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital and two of these are in intensive care.
Queensland Police Service arrested four people on a range of charges related to weapons and assault.
According to the witnesses, the fight lasted about 20 minutes and the fight was in terrible condition because at first people thought it was a part of the event.
“Oh my god. That was just so awful. We were challenged to a playfight with the wolverines, but some of them were wearing real knives on their hands. I have no idea how they got into here with those,” said Barbara Smith, 23, cosplayer from London.
“I was just walking through and I heard all this noise and then screaming. We thought people were just acting, so we were all laughing, but then you could see that there was blood and people started calling for help. I am first aid qualified, so I stopped and helped out a few people – it was really bad. The two people I looked after had stab wounds to their arms and hands, and one had really bad scratches on their face,” said Jack Sutherland, 21, cosplayer from Roma.
FakeComicCon’s immediate thoughts are with those who have been injured and their family. The event is expected to investigate this incident continuously with relevant authorities to make sure it is not repeated.
The event also has been run in Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide. In 2015, more than 30,000 people attended the Brisbane event alone.
FakeComicCon has been held in Brisbane for three years without incident, bringing out a astounding place for players.

The blog this week is really interesting. It is a great chance to approach a real-life situation in media writing industry. I found this pretty difficult at first but after having a look at the example provided in the study guide document, it became much easier to me.
The quiz is also a bit more complicated in terms of choosing the right words for sentence. On the whole, I have learnt a lots from the quiz.
Main points which were included in the chapter:
- The selection of the correct format in writing broadcast copy
- The condensedness of a story
- How to write a correct lead
- Ways to make articles more attractive and interesting
- Other advices for broadcast-copy writing
- The differences between broadcast and print-based media
As a key in the chapter, the different writing style for broadcast and print-based media was mentioned. It can be concluded that a greater development of the story is allowed with print-based media due to its characteristics. Particularly, readers can use their thoughts and imaginations to create a new insight based on words of the author. What we physically hear or see sometimes does not work in the same way with the visualization through a deep reading. On the contrary, the usage of multimedia tools is the key advantage of broadcast. The story will be accompanied with images, videos, audios and be more attractive to the audience as a result. The writing style in this case is often much more simple and direct. Both types of media have their own strengths and also play a big role in society.
This week, a practical of converting an interview into broadcast audio visual script needs to be presented. The conversation was taken place between my friend named Jolley and me 3 months ago when she decided to leave Sydney. Two-column format was selected. Over all, I found this practical was such an excellent exercise to get used to the media writing style. It was a little bit tough at first but I finally implemented it successfully.
The quiz this week is mostly about selection of the correct sentence. In the first attempt, I only got 3 out of 10. Overall, the quiz taught me to read much more carefully and consider the whole sentence.

As I mentioned before, creating a story on Storify is such an challenge at first. The hardest part was not the way to use Storify actually, but the requirements that the course coordinator wants me to do.
When everything was clear, I started creating the story. It turned out to be more simple than I thought. After coverting the quotes, I found out the way to add the Tweet into the story. On the whole, this activity is really enjoyable.
2. Practical B
The event I intend to cover is Moon Festival which will be hold in nearly 1 month. The photos and news will be tweeted by me during the festival time.
If the event is created based on a story on Storify, several issues will need to be considered. They are outlined below.
Who will be the audience? All residents in Cabramatta
What might they learn about the event? Throught Storify, they might get more insight about that traditional festival.
What needs to be included that will make the story interesting or have more impact? Numbers, funfacts, videos and behind the scene and so many other elements will be added to have people’s attention
How will I structure the story? I will cover the event by text to introduce it, then picture mostly for the activities, with descriptive caption as detailed as possible, which makes my story more interesting and more attractive.
This week’s quiz is focused on spelling, which makes me feel basic at first. When I have from 2 to 4 choices, I realized it was too complicated and easy to make mistakes. Anyways, by the second attempt, I had recorded a new high score.
